How can a good God allow suffering?

If we look at the world around us, it’s apparent that it is a world filled with brokenness and suffering. But what does this mean about God? Is he a good God who has no control over our suffering? Is he a cold and distant God who, though in control, has little compassion for us? Or is there another, more complex way to look at this difficult problem?
